Hornet vs. Hornet

     Welcome to an Olympic sized edition of the Slapshot which is number 33. The current season has been zooming by us like a bobsled competition. We are almost into the playoffs and it will only be March! The defending champion Hornets have crumbled like an Olympic skier launched across the snow hill. With the Hornets going winless, it gave every other team early access to the playoffs. You're welcome everyone! It was all part of our plan. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket. The Hornets staged their 2001-02 Season debacle! Ha! We had you all fooled!!! If you thought that was funny then check out the verbal face-off entitled Trash
Talk between the Hornets captains.
     Honestly, this current season might have been a Hornets' nightmare but the other teams deserve to be in the playoffs. We are heading into the final 2 weeks of the season with all four teams trying to decipher who they will face in the first playoff round. The Hornets are looking to achieve their first season victory in our last game and last week of the season against the Wolf Pack, gee no pressure! The Playoffs are already looking to consist of good games and teams. I, for one, am excited for this year's Wheeler's Cup Finals. For the champions I've got a cup to give to the new champion as the captain of last's year champions.
     Inside this issue is the first-ever Slapshot poll, when I asked everyone who they thought would be left standing for the Finals. Check out the results in FANdemonium, yet another new column... Meet the Players has finally returned to the Slapshot as guest columnist Chris Lemieux profiles the quiet Jamie Porter. For this volume of Slapshot issues, I'm experimenting with new columns and design stuff. So your input is encouraged (please I need input). Also you can view any issue of Slapshot now on the new and improved WCHL website plus my snazzy logo work for every column. Jeez, I don't ask for much do I? The
Slapshot will provide you with playoffs coverage in the next issue.

So until next time, I'm on the goal line!

WEEK 10 RECAP

COBRAS CLOBBERED

Seals..........2.....0.....2.....4 *
Cobras.......1.....1.....1.....3

     Rejuvenated and healthy the Cobras plan to turn up the heat before the playoffs. Beating the Seals would give the Cobras an opening move up in the standings. Meanwhile, the Seals were looking for a possible 3 game undefeated streak. WCHL rookie Mo Gerhardt cranked the Seals with an opening score for the Cobras giving them an early one-nothing lead. Being that it was only the first period, the Seals smacked the Cobras with 2 goals scored by Eric Cornell (from Matt Schwarck) and Zeljko "Z-Factor" Sreckovic (with an assist from Cornell). It was a close first period and it was only the beginning of the game. Down by a goal in the second period the icon Mike Belanger (off a dandy pass from Brandon Lesner) launched the game-tying goal. Think WCHL games are for wimps? Think again, 5 penalties in this game so far! After a back and forth tennis-like hockey game the game was tied 2 to 2. Punching through for the Seals' was Schwarck with a double jabbing of two unassisted goals. Propelling their lead to 4 to 2, the Cobras never quit scoring yet with another goal from Mr. Belanger (assisted by Lesner). The Seals rallied their defense to deliver a clobbering blow to the Cobra
offense winning the game in this close duel.

W. Pack......2.....3.....2.....7 *
Hornets.......0.....1.....1.....2

     The Hornets were clinging to hope to win at least one game this season, well it didn't happen against the Wolf Pack this week. The Hornets just struggled getting into the Wolf Pack's zone, every time they were driven back into their own net. Marty Witberg scored 7 goals, which is a record for most goals against goalies. The Hornets did get a couple goals and weren't shut out as they were by the Cobras in Week 9. Jamie Porter scored an unassisted second period goal and the Sniper Matt Resetar (assisted by Porter) scored a power play goal in the third period. The Wolf Pack barely had to try it was too easy for them even stopped
the Hornets with a 4 on 2 advantage. Nick Ireland was an assist monster delivering 4 huge assists. Despite the overwhelming score and odds the
Hornets never gave up, every single one played hard, it just wasn't might to be this game. The Hornets have one final game to win and it's against the Wolf Pack in Week 12.... fill-in your own comment here... The Pack squashed the blue bugs then used Raid it wasn't a pretty game for Hornets' fans. The Wolf Pack issued a message to all the other remaining teams LOOK OUT!

WEEK 11 GAME DAY
by Tom Martin
     Week 11 could be a preview of Round One match-ups as it is possible that any of these games could be playoff series. In the WCHL playoff system the first place team faces the fourth place team; meanwhile the second place team meets the third place team. The first place Outlaws clash with the fourth place Cobras then the third place Seals are forced to tackle the savage second place Wolf Pack. Oh yeah, first place is still up for grabs.

- COBRAS (3-5) vs. OUTLAWS (6-1-1)
     The Cobras last season game is against the current first place Outlaws. What kind of statement would the make if they dethrone the Outlaws? With an Outlaws loss and a Wolf Pack win the Outlaws would be put in second place. The Cobras only play 9 games for the season by the luck of draw. In the season the Outlaws have beat the Cobras twice in two close bouts, now the Cobras would love some payback! The Outlaws can crack the best WCHL record in history the Hornets of last season with 7-1-1.
     As for the game itself, arguably the greatest WCHL goalie ever sits in the Cobras' net will collide with the most powerful offense in the league right. Gary Bartle is a key factor in the Cobras winning this game. Also, Brandon Lesner and Mo Gerhardt are strong players and extremely vicious passers, if they are not trying to score they are setting up for a score. Mike Belanger needs to be an accurate shooter to attack the Outlaws defensive depth. Jason Drapinski is becoming a great all-around hockey player as he continues to impress everyone. Enough with those upstart Cobras, let's talk Outlaws... Of course, you've got the trio of tremendous power in Sheryl Stumbaugh, Jeff Bielecki, and James
Crawford. They can all score and pass often to each other. The Outlaws have the most assists in the WCHL. None of them are afraid to tackle the defensive side either. I mentioned the Outlaws defensive depth well that's thanks to Dave Rosen and rookie Alex Jones. They provide a first strike at any scoring attempt and will protect their goalie. Speaking of their goalie Eric Miller, he usually doesn't face much, if any, pressure; unfortunately for opponents he can take the pressure. Anthony Nowak has been a scorer, blocker, and a playmaker he's shown his ability to score with his 8 goals! Good luck to both teams!

- SEALS (4-3-1) vs. WOLF PACK (6-2)
     The Seals are trying to climb up the standings and can start to if they can beat the Pack and the Outlaws lose. Leaving them to face the Outlaws in the final week of the season, it is the Seals' greatest opportunity. The Wolf Pack dominated the Hornets in Week 10 giving the Outlaws something to think about. If the Outlaws lose either, of their final 2 games and the Pack win both they'll be sitting on top of the league. Last time these two sparred it out was Week 6 with Pack pulling out a 5- 3 victory however, the Seals are looking to rise up in the standings.
     This season's Seals are very impressive especially with rookie sensation Eric Cornell and Zeljko Sreckovic. Frequently teams overlook these two players, which is a deadly mistake as both are passers and shooters capable of scoring many goals. Matt Schwarck is a definite presence on the court and the teamwork maker on the Seals. Sneaky as ever is Paul D'Angelo, he often finds himself behind the defense, often times teams don't realize it until it is too late. In the goal, whether it is Chris Lemieux or Ryan Kay it's a tough call because both are solid goaltenders. It is quite an opportunity presented to the impressive Seals as they could knock out the top two teams in their final 2 games. Starting the season out undefeated until a Week 7 loss to the Outlaws, the Pack were on top of the league without much difficulty. Offenses often stumble when facing the Wolf Pack's staunch defense as they keep a low number of shots on goal during a game. Nick Ireland and Joe Zenicki are the two stellar defenders lets not forget their hotshot goalie Brian Ulewicz. With that combination it's tough to crack but then factor in Marty Witberg, Chuck Mallard, and Mary Stack providing even more defense not too mention some awesome scoring attempts. Opponents are faced with four or five shots on goal in less than a minute keeping goalies on constant pressure and little room for mistakes.

Several things happen around the league with each passing month, so let's take you around the wheel of the WCHL! Hey, do you know of a newsworthy story in the WCHL? Please let us know and it'll be highlighted here.

NHLPA HELPS WCHL
     The NHLPA [National Hockey League Player's Association], as part of their Goals and Dreams program, gave the WCHL $7,500 worth of playing equipment. After I had long hard talks and applications to fill out, the NHLPA has kindly agreed to donate over $7,500 worth of equipment to the WCHL. The equipment includes a portable scoreboard/clock and boards, so the ball no longer goes into the crowd. The boards are 5 feet long and weigh 7 lbs. The NHLPA are proud to be a sponsor of the WCHL and look forward to coming and presenting us with our equipment in the near future. - C. Lemieux

PROPS TO THE WCHL
     Hey all! It's been a good season so far, at least on the hockey floor. I think it's awesome that we all held together, and are still hard at it on the hockey front. As many of you know, I'm a student at Eastern Michigan University and a minor in Adapted Physical Education. I just wanted to let you all know that a professor of mine, Dr. Michael Paciorek, is very big on disabled sports. In fact, he has written on the subject in books and such. In fact, he just completed a new book and our league; the WCHL is listed in it! Isn't that cool?! In addition, he gives extra credit to people in his Adapted Phys. Ed. class for coming to our games and writing about what they saw. That's why we have had some different faces in the crowd lately. Anyways, just wanted to let you guys/gals all know these things as I think they are cool and good to know. --M. Schwarck

SEALS SHOUT-OUT
     I'd just like to say thank you to the Seals for a great year this year. We may not have the best record in the league, but I am having a blast of a time. Every game we play, I believe 100% in our ability to win and we are having a great time in the process. You are a great bunch of guys to play with, probably the best "team" I have ever played on. Continue to play hard and believe in our ability to win.
--C. Lemieux

COBRAS: CHANGE
     Guess what? The Cobras are healthy and we are ready to turn this season around. We have a full roster, which means every player on the team can play his or her natural positions. Each player can finally use their skills in the right situations instead of doing things on the floor that they are not accustomed to. I made a promise or a resolution that this team would turn it around. One week after I guaranteed the Cobras would play better, we beat the Pack. They are a great team. I also promised myself that I would quit playing with no emotion. My body felt like crap since October. I made a promise to a friend that I would become the Michael of old on the hockey floor and do everything in my power along with our teammates to try winning the cup. I can honestly say the best of #02, #05, #00, #21, #23, and #24 is yet to come which translates into a better Cobras team. We will never forget our biggest inspiration for the season our friend and teammate #14. We also would like to dedicate the second half of the season to our pal and rival #97. --M. Belanger

HORNETS PRIDE
     Hey Hornets. I know this season didn't turn out like we wanted. It's been a rough year. However, you all never gave up. So, for that I'm very proud of you all. I'm glad you were all on my squad this season. We might still make the playoffs but it's not looking good. No matter what the outcome you should all be happy of your efforts to be a great team. I can't promise we'll all be on a team together again. Just remember we've made every opponent work their butts off to get their wins. This by far has been the weirdest season I've been a part of. Despite everything, you all still kept a good attitude. We are excellent hockey players and we did everything right. So, we didn't have the best luck. But be proud of the fact no one really wants to play us. That says a lot to be afraid of a winless team. Personally, my victory this season was we finally played together and we didn't take any negative stuff into games. I only hope I didn't let you down by being your captain this season. Just know I'm very proud of you, and remember to have a positive attitude no matter what. I just sat and watched you all yesterday play from your hearts. And pulling
off things you never thought you could do. No one can take away your skill we had a rough season this year. It happens! Well I'm proud of each of you--just wanted to tell you all. Respectfully, Your Captain --T. Martin

WCHL PLAYER OF THE MONTH
* Sportsmanship
* Contributes to overall team
* Makes Big Plays
* Positive Game Attitude
The WCHL Player of the Month is an award that is given to any player who demonstrates the above qualities best in that month. As chosen by 5 other of his or her peers. The reason for this special award was that certain players weren't getting recognized for their endless efforts. Congratulations to all the players! Remember who is on the Committee is classified!

- JANUARY ~ Kenny Haran
     If the WCHL kept stats in the defense department, Kenny Haran would be on top or near the top in most categories. He has been a constant defensive threat to many opponents but now he scores too. Kenny circled the rink and plowed through defenders en route to scoring his first goal in three years. Kenny is playing more awesome hockey this season than ever before and now he's showing his true potential. He truly deserves this honor of January's Player of the Month. He has the best spirit in the entire league. Nothing beats his goal-scoring dance on the Hornets bench. One of biggest highlights for the Hornets of this season was Kenny Haran's hockey playing, almost like a renaissance for a hockey defensive artist. Watch out for Kenny from now on!

     1. "Kenny, for taking his game up another notch and killing plays and
     making them." --Kenneth Lay
     2. "What else can I say? Kenny scored for the first time in 3 years,
     and did it in style too." --Kent Brockman
